Mugabe, Zimbabwe and African Liberation
At the International Peoples Assembly on Zimbabwe, held in London on Saturday 17th May 2003, delegates poured praises on the name of Robert Mugabe. One speaker even went as far as to suggest that "Mugabe is the solution" to the problems facing us as a people. To most of the people attending this packed conference, Mugabe is the saviour of Africa. As the only Global African leader able and willing to defy the murderous onslaught of a Global Europe hell bent on the recolonisation of Africa, he has become a modern Messianic super hero suitable for deification.
To an alarmingly large number of people (including a small number of misguided Africans) on the other side of the widening divide between Africans and Europeans, Robert Mugabe has suddenly become an antidemocratic dictator who must be eliminated at all costs. To them, since his belated support for land redistribution, he has become a cruel despot, responsible for all of Africa’s ills and therefore a suitable candidate for vilification and execution.
How did we come to this? How did Robert Mugabe come to be the only hope of a despairing community and the incarnation of evil to another?
Robert Mugabe was the leader of Zanu, one of the many forces winning the fight for the liberation of Zimbabwe, when the British Government used their most powerful weapon, "peace" talks, in a desparate attempt to hold on to power.
Many, many more Africans were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for a truly free Zimbabwe when Mugabe and his comrades signed the ill-conceived Lancaster House "agreement" which effectively postponed Zimbabwe’s freedom and guaranteed Global Europe’s continued dominance. For nearly two decades after his enthronement Mugabe was the darling of Global Europe when, instead of trying Smith and his gang for war crimes against Africa, he chose to reward them with Reconciliation and feature them in Reconstruction.
Today his supporters say that he was forced into compromise by the front-line states, the very people who were supposed to be his staunchest allies. Some of his critics say that a true freedom fighter on the verge of winning her or his country’s freedom, will never be forced to surrender. Others also say, regardless of the imposition of destructive Structural Adjustment Programmes, European sanctions and externally controlled and directed social disruption, his mismanagement and misappropriation of public funds has brought Zimbabwe to the brink of disaster.
Whether Robert Mugabe is right or wrong for Zimbabwe is not for Global Europe to decide, that decision is for the people of Zimbabwe and Global Africa. We have the right to choose our own governance. As a people at war, the most important question we need to answer in relation to our "leaders" and teachers is whether they are spearheading the fight against our enemies or whether for their own political or economic ends, they are acting on behalf of our enemies (see Leadership and Self Determination).
Any African person who acts in our interest, regardless how they acted before, will be attacked by our enemies. That fact was not lost on the speaker who, in collaboration with the chair, scuttled a resolution calling for the recognition that we are at war, because of her fear of being investigated by the US Homeland Security goon squad. This Sister, who declared earlier that "Mugabe is the solution" is not unique in our community. She is typical of those of us who feel content to let others risk their lives.
Let us not debate further whether Robert Mugabe is a good or bad man. That is an expensive diversion. Like every other head of state, there will be some degree of truth in everything that is said about him and his administration. Mugabe is under attack.
Regardless which side of the fence you are on, there can be no doubt that, in giving the finger to Global Europe, Robert Mugabe has, finally, given Global Africans a renewed sense of confidence and pride in self.
No man or woman is greater than an idea or a principle. Let us not focus on any individual as the reason for opposing or not opposing Global Europe’s quest for world domination because that is the surest route to self-destruction, as our enemies find it much easier to deal with one individual than a nation of a billion people.
When I said at another pro-Zimbabwe conference recently that we should be careful not to fall into the "Divide and Conquor" trap of debating irrelevances such as the pros and cons of Mugabe, I was accused of being anti-Mugabe, therefore anti-African, therefore a mortal enemy of my accuser. My poor, sycophantic Brother could not see that his attack on me was proving my very point.
Take Iraq as an example, where the successful demonisation of Saddam Husein, the bogey man created by and formally financed by Global Europe, caused some otherwise sensible Iraqi people to not only welcome but encourage, a US invasion of their own country.
Let us not fall into that trap, Brothers and Sisters. It is the duty of every African to free our minds and free our lands. There is no circumstance under which any foreign entity can justifiably invade any African territory while we breathe - with or without UN backing. Africa must be free. With the guidance and protection of our Ancestors, Africa will be free. Only we can set us free.
